TACKING UP

Parts of the snaffle bridle

FITTING A NECK STRAP

If a neck strap is required a stirrup leather can be used.

It should be buckled on the left hand site and allow a clenched fist between the neck and the strap.

If the tack does not fit the horse inform your supervisor so that a different saddle and bridle can be used.
Always use the correct size headcollar which can be adjusted comfortably when securing the horse.

TAKING OFF THE BRIDLE

Untack from the left hand side of the horse.

  1. Dismount, put your arm through the reins and run up the stirrups and loosen the girth.
  2. Pick up the headcollar and put it over your shoulder.
  3. If the horse wears a running martingale undo the buckle of the reins remove it from the martingale rings and fasten the reins again.
  4. Undo the noseband and remove the loop of the standing martingale if the horse wears one.
  5. Undo the throat lash.
  6. Put the lead rope over the horse's neck,
  7. Gently slide the bridle over the horse's head giving him time to open his mouth and drop the bit taking care that it does not catch on his teeth.
  8. Put on the headcollar as quickly as possible and tie the horse up.
  9. Hang up the bridle either outside the stable or over your shoulder.
