Introduction of aims of lesson

Individual exercise: Students to jot down any rules they can think of

Discussion: List rules of watering inviting students to contribute from their own list

  • When and when not to water
  • Rules of watering
  • LIST EACH RULE ON FLIP CHART/ BOARD AS YOU SPEAK ABOUT IT

    Group exercise: Two groups. Group One to identify different methods of watering in stable, Group Two to identify different methods of watering in fields

    Each group to report methods identified. Elected member of group to write them up on flip chart

    Discuss methods of providing water in fields and stables
    Advantages and disadvantages of:

  • Containers
  • Toughs
  • Automatic systems
  •  

    PRACTICAL: Location: Yard and fields TIME:

    Group One to identify watering systems in the fields noting safety and hygiene points
    Group Two to identify watering systems in the stables noting safety and hygiene points

    Where necessary assist with identification of systems

    DEMONSTRATE CORRECT WAY TO REFILL AND CARRY BUCKETS AND CLEAN TROUGHS

    Divide into small groups allocating practical tasks of cleaning and re-filling water containers

    Discuss findings One member from each group to report and write points on board

    Discuss Safety and Hygiene listing points on the board. Students to contribute their points

  • Awareness of correct lifting methods
  • Importance of clean, fresh water being available at all times
  • Importance of cleaning containers
  • Students should now complete task sheet

    Out of class activity: Read NVQ Level 1 Horse Care book pages 1.1 - 1.4 and collect and label pictures, photographs or diagrams of watering systems to put into portfolio

    TRAINER/ ASSESSOR: Has every student been observed doing these tasks during the lecture/training?

    ENSURE ALL ASSESSMENT SHEETS, WRITTEN QUESTION PAPERS, OR DICTAPHONE TAPES ARE PLACED IN CANDIDATES PORTFOLIO
