Chapter 3

A CORRECT POSITION IN THE SADDLE AND THE CORRECT WAY TO HOLD THE REINS

Sitting in the saddle

  1. When you have mounted put your right foot in the stirrup straight away.
  2. Check your stirrups are the same length.
  3. Sit in the middle of your saddle.
  4. Sit squarely facing the front.
  5. Sit as straight as you can. Do not lean to one side or the other.
  6. Sit as tall as you can. Do not tip forward, or lean back.

Imagine there is a straight line from your ear to your hip to your heel.

Imagine there is another straight line from your elbow to your wrist, along the bottom of your hand, along the rein to the pony's bit.
